Chlorination decision looms this week „„ By Georgia O’Connor Harding and Andrew King DRINKING WATER from the Avonhead pump station could be chlorinated because it is at risk of being contaminated. The city council will decide on Thursday whether it will chlorinate
drinking water not only at the Avonhead pump, but at Farrington and Grampian pump stations as well. Chlorination is being considered because the north-west catchment bores have a low grading of D, while the rest of the city has a higher B grade. The city council report said that the
recent water contamination incident in Havelock North has raised concerns about water and public health risks. The city council report has recommended that temporary chlorination goes ahead until deeper wells are commissioned in 2017. •Turn to page 9

Anger over boy racers By Georgia O’Connor-Harding TENSIONS ARE ready to spill over on a Hornby street because boy racers have been keeping residents awake. Now residents are retaliating by throwing stones at vehicles. A petition has been signed by nearly 100 residents living in Oakhampton St, Hornby, to stop “dangerous” boy racers and speeding trucks by getting speed bumps installed. It was presented to the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board last Tuesday and was supported with a letter from Wigram MP Megan Woods. Residents are frustrated by the amount vehicles speeding through the street, saying it is an accident waiting to happen and keeping them awake at night. Resident Vi O’Connor, who presented the petition to the board, said many were stressed and not sleeping at night. She said some of the residents were so angry, people had been throwing rocks at the boy racers as they drove past. “It is very noisy as well as dangerous when people are trying to sleep. A lot of them

have got their bedrooms up near the road. “There are so many kids in the street, it is surprising none of them have been hurt,” Mrs O’Connor said. Acting Senior Sergeant Dan Harker said he was not aware of the issue and residents need to call the police at the time of the incident. He said the police “clearly” do not encourage residents
to throw rocks at cars or take matters into their own hands. The problems arose after speed bumps were installed on Brynley St about eight years ago, which is directly across from Oakhampton St. But community board chairman Mike Mora said speed bumps may not be the best solution. “It can cause more issues and frustrations for residents

$56,000 RAISED Original Foods Baking has helped raise more than $56,000 for the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal over the past three years. The Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal cake is a red velvet celebration cake sold in Countdown stores nationwide. One dollar from every cake sold is donated to the appeal. The appeal was set up to help provide much needed medical equipment to 11 children’s hospital wards around the country, including Christchurch Hospital. The annual appeal has raised $9.3 million since it first began in 2007.

50s fashion fundraiser draws crowd By A lex Lim A VINTAGE-enthusiast orchestrated a fashion show that showcased more than a hundred vintage outfits last Saturday at Halswell School. It involved 12 teachers, six parents and close to a dozen school children. Deborah Gill-Smith, a fulltime chef who provided the vintage outfits from the 50s, 60s and 70s, had organised seven vintage fashion shows in the last four years primarily to help people raise money. Ms Gill-Smith said vintage clothes, mostly styled in London but locally made, were better than manufactured goods in terms of quality and were “different,” giving her a sense of individuality.

She hoped young people would appreciate and treasure clothing from their grandparents. “It is exposing them to vintage as their lives are very modern,” she said. Halswell School teacher and “vintage fashion model” Ange Pettersson said everyone had fun in the community and it was nice to do something different for fundraising. “Who does not like getting dressed up?” She said the children realised the teachers were “actually
humans” and it was good for the parents to see them in a different light, building the connection between home and school. Vintage fashion show event coordinator Carmel Hooper said the event helped to supplement funds to build a playground, a fitness circuit and a native planting area. Swimmer ready for transplant games By Georgia O’Connor-Harding BEN STANBURY, 11, was once told he had a one-in-three chance of dying. Now, after receiving a liver transplant last year, the young swimmer will be the only child organ recipient from New Zealand to be compete at the Australian Transplant Games held in Sydney. Ben, of St Albans, will travel to Sydney this week to compete in swimming, shot-put, a 50m sprint and 10-pin bowling. At four months old, Ben was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease after he was rushed to hospital with heart failure. The disease is a genetic disorder where abnormal cysts grow in the kidneys. He also had severe problems with his liver. The night of his diagnosis was a moment his mother Traci Stanbury would never forget after she was told he had a one-in-three chance in dying. “In the end they paralysed him, put him on an ambulance and he spent the next month living up in Starship Hospital,” she said. Mrs Stanbury said since the “traumatic” night, Ben’s heart

condition has been sorted but he still had a liver and kidney condition. Last year Ben had a transplant operation after he was donated
a liver. “All I remember is lying in bed with just like a giant band-aid thing over my stomach,” Ben said.

It was an experience he described as “confusing” but because he recovered so quickly from the operation he was out of hospital in about five weeks
and back into swimming a few months later. Over the next few years Ben will be looking to have a kidney transplant with his kidney function currently at 40 per cent. Mrs Stanbury said he will be put on a waiting list of about 600 people when it gets to 30 per cent. But for now, Ben is looking forward to going over to competing in the games as well as visiting Featherdale Wildlife Park. “For him to be the exact same as everyone else in the room and to be completely normal, that is quite a cool thing for him to do,” Mrs Stanbury said. Inspired by paralympian Sophie Pascoe, who won five medals at the Rio Paralympics, Ben will be competing in numerous events including his favourite sport of swimming. Ben first became interested in swimming at age four and leading up to the games he has been practising once a week in preparation. “Never give up because it can always be done,” he said. “Ben is very proud of the fact he is going. He is a very laid-back kid by nature just because of everything he has been through,” Mrs Stanbury said.

‘Army’ to the rescue By Gabrielle Stuart THE PLIGHT of children rescued from their homes by Child, Youth and Family, sometimes with nothing but the clothes on their back, has mobilised an army. “Paddy’s Army”, that is – a group of about 25 St Patrick’s School pupils in Bryndwr who have collected almost 150 pairs of pyjamas to give to foster children. The pyjamas will be included in backpacks made up by volunteer group Foster Hope Christchurch, which also include things like toiletries, books and soft toys. Co-ordinator Ngarie Worsley said the packs were personalised for each foster child, to try to make them feel loved and valued at a rough point in their lives, when they had to leave their own homes to move in with a foster family. “We used to see children come with garbage bags full of stuff, and if your stuff is in a garbage bag you don’t exactly feel so great,” she said. The St Patrick’s pupils were inspired to help by the stories of one of their classmates, who was a foster child, Paddy’s Army member Izzy Gibson said. “We thought that we’re so

They created posters, spoke in assembly to inspire their fellow pupils to help, and did “a lot of nagging” to collect the pyjamas, fellow army member Kate Wield said. In the past, the pupils have organised a blanket collection for St Vincent de Paul, and they plan to do more to help local charities in the future.
Mrs Worsley said the pupils’ effort would make a huge difference to Foster Hope, which works to put together about 5000 packs each year. “It just blows my mind and I think it’s incredible, because 150 pairs of pyjamas means that we can more than do what we need to do this year,” she said. The areas “specifically affected” will be notified, particularly “vulnerable parties” such as dialysis patients. Russley, Avonhead and Memorial Residents’ Association chairman Geoff Judge (right) said it is the first he has heard of the chlorination but if there is a risk then the water has to be chlorinated. “It rather concerns me because we are used to having such lovely water. If it has chlorine in it, it would be just awful,” Mr Judge said. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said the board was not briefed on the chlorination. The other options for city councillors to consider are; upgrade the other wells quicker
without chlorination, continue the projects original timeline and include chlorination or do nothing. Bores at Burnside and Harewood could have standby units for chlorination. Professor for strategic waterway management at the Waterway Centre Bryan Jenkins said the water will be safe to drink if chlorinated, but with a change in taste and smell. “Provided they use appropriate means of chlorinating the water it will make it safer to drink while the new bores are drilled down to an appropriate depth,” he said. Fundraiser for Maddie ABOUT $2,462 has been raised by Villa Maria College to support a St Margaret’s College student in need of a kidney transplant. The school held a mufti day last Tuesday for 12-year-old Maddie Collins, who’s best hope of finding a suitable match will require her to travel to the United States. The trip is expected to cost $350,000. Villa Maria College head girl Liv Kerr said everyone at the school rallied together for the event which was cool to see. “All the year 13s slaved away the night before baking so we could have a bake sale...so we could add a little bit of money to the pot,” she said. Major developments scheduled for local high school
A
n integral part of the Hornby community, Hornby High School, which opened in 1975, is itself about to undergo significant developments. All the present school buildings, apart from the auditorium and music school, which will have a facelift, are to be demolished and replaced with a brand-new complex of buildings. Work on the $24-million project is due to start in March/April 2017 with completion expected in late 2018. Principal Robin Sutton reveals the details: “The administration building and the library will be demolished and replaced with one large, 90-metre-long building, which will house our specialised teaching areas – the sciences, design/technology and the arts. That’s where we believe the heart of the school is.” “Creativity is at the heart of what we do,” he adds. “As technology changes, the ability for all of us to be creative human beings is what matters.” In more physical terms, the heart of the new school, the whare, also located in this building, will be the focus of the school’s cultural activities. The school’s new library will incorporate a student café, which will be nothing like the standard school tuck shop, Mr Sutton says. A place where students can take time out between classes, it will offer comfortable seating areas and a barista station. Also part of the development is a space comprising three learning hubs, each designed to accommodate 200 students and offer flexibility for different teaching and learning activities. It will allow for additions at a later date. Covered laneways between the various buildings will provide space where students can “hang out”. Hornby High will also be getting a brand-
new gymnasium, or more precisely, two gymnasiums built as one complex, with a basketball court in each building. “This is to meet community demand for recreational facilities in Hornby,” Mr Sutton says. Hornby High School is growing, with the new buildings initially designed to accommodate 800 students, but with the Masterplan providing the capacity for 12001300 students, he says. The Ministry of Education’s acting head of sector enablement and support, Steve Stuart, explains that the new classrooms at Hornby High are part of the Christchurch Schools Rebuild programme, which is investing $1.137b to remodel, rebuild, and repair 115 schools in the Christchurch region. “The programme is repairing earthquake damage caused by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, fixing weather tightness issues, strengthening buildings where required and upgrading schools’ teaching spaces,” Mr Stuart says. “By the end of the programme, more than 80 per cent of state school teaching spaces in greater Christchurch will meet high quality standards for lighting, ventilation, heating and acoustics, and all will be equipped to support the latest digital technology. “We aim to create flexible learning spaces that will support each school’s vision for raising achievement for students. We have spent $2m on eight new classrooms for Year 7 and 8 students at Hornby High School. Building works are planned to take place in three major stages, while minimising student disruption and allowing the school to stay open throughout.” Mr Sutton says the Ministry has been “awesome” to work with and all the schools around the city involved in the redevelopment programme are co-operating with each other.

With its fast-growing shopping area and other key developments, Hornby is attracting a wide diversity of people from Hornby and further afield. Western News spoke to some of them out and about in the Hornby shopping area to find out their opinions on the changes that have been taking place.

A Rolleston resident, Pip Muir shops regularly in Hornby as it is on her way home from work. She thinks the changes are good for the area and says it’s good to see more shops in The Hub. She is also happy to see the other new developments taking place around Hornby. A New Brighton resident, but formerly from Hornby, June Tyrell visits Hornby twice a week to collect children from school and uses the opportunity to visit The Hub. She says the shops are looking very attractive and she can’t wait for it to be finished. Raj, his wife Nimi Bedi moved down
from Auckland almost six months ago, and are living in Rolleston. They followed their son, Dushan who had come to Christchurch to help with the rebuild, bringing his wife Sonia and son Anhad. The family comes to Hornby to shop almost every day and say the changes are long overdue. Raj is a Justice of the Peace and volunteers at the Hornby Citizens Advice Bureau. A visitor from Kaikoura, this was the third time Julie Syme had been to The Hub. She says the changes are “quite refreshing” and she likes seeing the changes and the growth in Hornby. She appreciates the “good signage” in The
Hub and says she will be back. Cherie, Josh and Alex Cooper live in Rolleston but come to Hornby “all the time,” Cherie says. She and her sons enjoy The Hub – Cherie likes all the new shops and the boys like the slushies at Wendy’s, the sushi and Couplands Bakery. They also enjoy letting off steam at Mega Air, the indoor trampoline park in Carmen Road. Prebbleton resident Sandra Fairbairn visits Hornby once a week. She says the new developments are going to revolutionise the area. She believes they are good for the local people and the
economy, and says there is a tremendous cross-section of businesses coming in. Hornby resident Debbie Dick loves shopping at the new mall, and says she is so pleased to have the new food court there. There are a lot of fast food restaurants around the mall, and it was about time they put in a food court, Debbie says. Spotted shopping in The Hub, Jason Mendoza and Don Don Tanggap arrived from the Philippines around two months ago. They are working as upholsterers at Sleepyhead and living at nearby Awatea. They like shopping at the Hub for the “good prices,” especially at Pak ‘n’ Save.
Iconic mall heart of Hornby shopping
W
hile Hornby boasts a huge range of retail outlets, including many of New Zealand’s major brand names, the heart of the suburb’s shopping environment is undoubtedly its iconic mall – The Hub Hornby. Providing a central shopping spot for residents since it opened in 1976 as Hornby Mall, the complex has undergone many changes over the last 40 years. Originally, it was housed in a number of separate buildings, but the last 20 years have seen the businesses in the complex come together to operate under one roof, with a $7.5 million redevelopment taking place in 1998. The 1980s and 1990s saw the mall grow in popularity, taking on a more family focus, though today as an integral part of the community, it caters for all demographics. Another major refurbishment took place in 2005 with a new architectural look and a new colour scheme, and the following year the name was changed from Hornby Mall to The Hub Hornby, bringing a mixed response from local residents. One notable feature, centre manager Jason Marsden points out, is that The Hub Hornby is one of very few locally owned shopping malls in the South Island, and as such has developed its own distinct culture. Prior to the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, expansion work had been planned for the centre, Mr Marsden says, and that work began in 2012. Hornby was fortunate to escape major earthquake damage, and with no structural damage sustained, The
Hub was only closed for half a day after the February 22 event, he says. All the buildings are now 100-plus per cent of code. Among the many developments that have been occurring over the last 15 years, one of the most significant was the opening of the new Farmers store
covering 6000 sqm over two levels in September 2014. The development, which was completed in March this year, also includes six speciality shops located at the entrance to Farmers. Providing greater convenience for Hub shoppers will be the installation of a ramp to connect the two levels of roof-top car parking, creating a flow between them. It will be accessible from the upper level of the Farmers. A new internal retail precinct following the line of Chalmers Street and joining the new Farmers with the northern entrance is also now open. “This creates a flow right through the centre of The Hub,” Mr Marsden says. Following on from that will be the opening of the
northern atrium, which will become the main entrance to the complex. This is due for completion in midNovember. The new food court space is also now accessible with tenants opening as they complete their fit-outs,” Mr Marsden says. “This is an architecturally d e s i g n e d contemporary space offering different types of seating, depending on what people want. In addition to the existing food outlets, there will be more opening up giving our shoppers even greater choice.” The other advantage for Hub shoppers, Mr Marsden says, is that it is just a five-minute walk from several large retailers in the area, namely Dressmart, The Warehouse and Toy World, with Mitre 10 and Harvey Norman also close by. “Hornby is becoming known for its retail. And there is good development still happening, with new businesses still opening up. The stars are aligned, it’s a great location, there’s a strong, vibrant, growing community, so we are on the ascendancy.” Today, The Hub Hornby offers shoppers an enticing mix of retail and service outlets, including the major banks – a central point where locals and visitors can browse and shop in a friendly, community-minded environment.

Focus on achieving goals at Hornby fitness centre

Karate Club Sends Student to Japan for Championship
ith the title of the SoKyokuishin World Karate Championship Tournament in Japan just around the corner, Steve Burt is currently immersed in intensive training with his instructor, Sensei Mark Webster at the Hornby based Kyokushin Karate Club. Next month Steve will head to Shizuoka-city to compete against the world’s top fighters.
To reach the finals - held in Japan on 22 and 23 October - Steve won several bouts in order to qualify for the world championship. With a 3rd Kyu Green Belt Black Tab and having won two match fights in Milton within the past year, Steve is well equipped to take on some of the world’s most experienced fighters in Japan next month. Just one amongst a hundred from over 50 countries around the globe, Steve has put in the hard yards over the years to reach this exciting point. Since being captivated by JeanClaude Van Damme’s fighting skills in action movies as a young boy, Steve has cultivated his passion to emulate his hero. Growing up in Karamea, however, training opportunities were few and far between he fostered his ambition for martial arts through teaching himself the basics from books. When he was 15 his dad got a job driving milk tankers to and from Hokitika where Steve knew there were weekly karate classes. After some
careful negotiations with his mother Steve struck a deal to join his father on his weekly trips so he could attend karate classes on Sundays. This routine of long distance classes continued until Steve moved to Nelson two and a half years later and karate has
been a pillar in his life ever since. In anticipation of the tournament in Japan next month the 34 year old has spent the past three months in intensive training with his eye firmly on the prize. Competition is fierce and with it comes unflinching commitment for this

aspiring karate master. On top of training in the regular classes on Mondays and Thursdays every week with the rest of the club, Steve spends an additional 1-4 hours 5-6 days a week in one-on-one training with Sensei Webster. “A typical session begins with 10 minutes of skipping to warm up followed by dynamic stretching. Mark has also developed a series of information cards for clients, which inform them about the nutritional consequences of medication they take, and what they can do about that. Mark says he was “honored and humbled to receive the awards”.
“It is wonderful to have recognition by your peers and to compare your own standards of care on a national basis. It’s rewarding to know I am delivering nationally recognised care.” For each of his two awards, Mark received a trophy, plus $1000 cash, and a certificate for his runner-up placing. These were presented at the awards dinner in Auckland on August 6.

Post-quake residential growth a boon for Hornby
here has been a significant residential movement to the south and west of Christchurch city following the earthquakes that severely damaged large swathes of the eastern suburbs, and Hornby has been a “huge beneficiary” of this movement, says regional director for REINZ Canterbury/Westland/Nelson/ Marlborough, Jim Davis. “Hornby has taken off as a result, with the new shops and everything else that has gone on contributing to this, and with people moving to where there was employment,” Mr Davis says. “Following the earthquakes there was an initial increase in employment right through this part of Christchurch. Hornby has benefitted because it is an affordable suburb to buy homes in, which has brought a lot of people here.” REINZ figures show that over the months of May, June and July 2015, residential sales in Hornby and the surrounding suburbs of Wigram, Sockburn, Aidanfield and Halswell were as follows: May, 54 sales, with a median price of $470,000; June, 65 sales with a median price of $520,000; and July, 66 sales with a median price of $484,000. In the same three months this year, sales were as follows: May, 74 sales with a median price of $536,500; June, 66 sales with a median price of $469,250; July, 57 sales with a median price of $482,500.
The improvements in roading, such as the Southern Motorway and the by-pass north to Russley Road, have also benefitted Hornby, Mr Davis says. New subdivisions in adjacent areas are contributing to Hornby’s growth, too. “Rolleston has grown at a huge rate and people living there stop off in Hornby for shopping on their way to and from Christchurch, and this has added to the
interest in the suburb.” Mr Davis believes the retail developments have brought a change of image to Hornby and people are looking at the suburb differently now. “It’s not the outpost of Christchurch that it once was.” On the city side of Hornby, Wigram has also seen major growth following the earthquakes, including the sub-division at
Wigram Skies on the former air force base, which is being developed by Ngai Tahu Property. “South-west Christchurch has long been an identified growth corridor for the city and Wigram Skies provided the impetus for the development of this region in the post-earthquake era,” says development manager Wigram Skies Scott Johansson. “In the earlier stages of the development there was demand from a number of red zone residents. Anecdotally, there were also a lot of sales coming from people who had sold their existing dwellings to red zoners and then upgraded to a new house at Wigram.” Another sub-division, Awatea, which is a public-private housing project comprising affordable homes, is being constructed on Crown-owned land in Wigram by Fletcher Residential. The 11.5-hectare site was land owned by the NZ Transport Agency and left over from the construction of the Southern Motorway. When completed, the development will have a total of 238 homes, with 40 per cent of them priced below $400,000. Residents from these developments, and other sub-divisions further west, such as Longhurst and Knights Stream Park in Halswell will potentially bring hundreds more customers into the Hornby retail and business area, contributing to its continuing growth, Mr Davis says.

t is almost forty years ago that Michael Turner trained as a hairdresser, learning the skills of the trade while working in London and France. In 1993, Michael moved to Perth in Western Australia where he set up a salon at Murdoch University, before establishing an up-market full service salon at Mount Lawley in Perth. Michael has always loved hairdressing. His enthusiasm and expertise led to his appointment as the Director of the International Hair Stylists Society in Australia, and board member on the Hairdressers Registration Board and Hairdressers’ Guild in Western Australia. “Michael is a passionate hairdresser who gets twitchy if he doesn’t cut hair for two days,” laughs his wife, Angela. When the couple’s daughter, met and married a New Zealander, Angela and Michael had no intention of living in this country. hen you look at all the product Mazda has to offer new car buyers, especially here in New Zealand, there’s one vehicle which looks out of place – that is the BT50 light commercial ute. I say that because Mazda has a huge manufacturing emphasis on cars and sport utility vehicles, and the line-up it has now is focused heavily on providing buyers with quality product fit for purpose. Nevertheless, to be profitable and competitive in today’s global market, companies which have utility vehicles are experiencing a buoyancy like never before, more so here in New Zealand. Last year Ford’s Ranger utility was the biggest selling vehicle overall, and that has never happened in this country before. Mazda have capitalised on Ranger’s success as well, the BT50 is a sister vehicle; while the shape is different, the platform and engine are the same.
The BT50 has just had a substantial upgrade both outside and inside. Major exterior changes include a new grille and lights up front, while rear tail light assemblies have had significant garnish changes. Inside, there are new seat coverings, and an upgrade on the plastic trim elements. According to Mazda the changes give the BT50 a more aggressive, muscular look and by my reckoning, it is still one of the best looking utes in the New Zealand market. Elsewhere, the BT50 is much the same rugged ute as it ever has been. It lands in a range of 13 variants priced from $35,295 to $57,295. All have a 3.2-litre five-cylinder engine, and there are the usual choices between single cab, Freestyle cab and double-cab, two and four-wheel-drive. And there are options between manual or automatic transmission, although it’s fair to say, most are autos. The test vehicle was the range topping
GSX double cab automatic. Incidentally, that model with manual transmission is available at $55,295. I’ve often written about how much I enjoy five-cylinder engines, they have a characteristic of their own, and in the BT50, it stands out for its smooth and rattle-free operation. It is a twin-camshaft, 20-valve unit which is rated at 147kW and 470Nm, it is a high technology engine which offers low maintenance costs thanks to a new capped price servicing initiative by Mazda New Zealand. It also has the benefit of low fuel usage. Mazda claim a 9.2-litre per 100km (31mpg) combined cycle average for the BT50. My time with the test vehicle constantly listed around 10l/100km (28mpg) with an instantaneous figure of 7.7l/100km (36mpg) available at a 100km/h cruise (engine speed 1800rpm). Power is harnessed seamlessly through the six-speeder. The ratios are a wide spread of what is required for low range

work as well as broadening to promote those satisfactory fuel usage figures. The driveline is smooth, hiding well the tough mechanical elements that have high demands, such as a 3500kg towing figure. Naturally, the four-wheel-drive system has a low ratio transfer case, it can be manipulated by a console-mounted switch. I didn’t do a lot of off-road work, but I did tackle a long shingle incline deep in the Malvern Hills. The BT50 is in its element on rutted road surfaces, the suspension is supple, dealing to bumps and corrugations, and providing a cushioned ride. Bearing in mind that the BT50 still has a leaf-spring located live rear axle, the suspension engineers have done well to create the civilised ride along with the load bearing properties needed in the traditional ute. The BT50 also gets a high ground clearance of 237mm, which means cross-country travel can be tackled with confidence. The BT50 is at home on the seal as it is off-road. I took the test car on a long highway drive and it is relaxing and inviting to drive. Such is the civilised way it rides, it is easy to head into a corner with more speed on than realised, so it must be remembered there are some cornering limitations. In terms of on-road performance, a standstill to 100km/h time of 9.6sec is pretty useful for a big, heavy vehicle which weighs in at just over two-tonne. With the mid-range torque figure it will also blast thorough a highway overtake without effort.

fter nearly a decade away, one of Christchurch’s most well-known motor vehicle parts businesses has returned to Hornby. As of September 1, Butler Auto Mart is back trading in its Brynley Street premises, from where it had previously operated for 20 years. Managing director of the family owned and operated business, Tony Butler, says over the past nine-plus years he has been approached by many Hornby locals asking
store manager Edward Butler, who has been working in the industry for some 20 years and has a well-established reputation for his knowledge and expertise. “We sell the things that make the car run, like engine parts and wheel bearings, our range is very extensive, and we can source anything, nationwide and worldwide. “If something a customer wants is not in stock we will go to any lengths necessary to find it. Our customers quickly realise that they do not need to shop around
for the business to return, and after careful consideration it was decided to move back to a “booming Hornby”. The building at 4 Brynley Street, which the Butlers own, has been extensively renovated over the last three months and stocked with an extensive range of auto parts brought in from its other branches, which were bursting at the seams. “We specialise in car parts for all makes and models, particularly classic cars. We can supply parts for cars from the early 1900 models up to the present day,” says
– if it is available we will get it at the best possible price; if we can’t get what our customer wants, then it will not be available anywhere,” Edward says. “Customers just need to leave their phone number and we will get back to them.” Butler Auto Mart has two other branches in Christchurch – 407 Colombo St, Sydenham and The Super Store at 261 Stanmore Road, Richmond, which started in 1975. “We are very pleased to be back in Hornby,” Edward says.

Project offers affordable homes for rent and purchase
A
n innovative Christchurch housing project is being developed in Lesley Keast Place Hornby. A collaborative partnership between the New Zealand Housing Foundation, Salvation Army, Abbeyfield, Housing Plus Charitable Trust, the Rata Foundation, Christchurch City Council and Government its aim is to provide new, affordable living accommodation for low-income single people and families, both for rent and purchase.
The project has seen a number of properties being completed and occupied over the last year or so and there are more to come. “The whole concept for the development is about creating a community with a mix of incomes and ages, so there’s a balance,” says project manager for the New Zealand Housing Foundation in Christchurch, Bill King. Constructed on behalf of the nationwide Abbeyfield New Zealand organisation, Abbeyfield House at number 6 Lesley Keast Place, was opened in November 2015. A communal-style accommodation facility comprising 12 studios, each with en-suite, it is especially suited to older people who are on their own – either single or widowed, and want to keep some independence while having company around when they feel they need it. The development was planned prior to the Christchurch earthquakes and
wasn’t built in response to those events, Mr King says. However, with the quakes creating an increase in housing demand from across the city, all 12 studios were taken up promptly, and there is a long waiting list. Also part of the Hornby development are eleven smaller homes, which will be constructed as rental properties for the Housing Plus Charitable Trust and will be completed and occupied by the end of 2017. A key plank of the Housing Foundation’s programme is the shared
ownership model, which was launched in Auckland nine years ago. Brand-new three- and four-bedroom homes are built on the basis that the occupants purchase a share in the home in conjunction with the foundation. “The share they take will depend on what they can afford. For example, the purchasers may take a 75 per cent share and the charitable trust the other 25 per cent,” Mr King says. “The scheme is aimed at families who can’t quite make it in terms of raising a sufficient deposit or afford repayments

on a full bank mortgage. They have the opportunity to eventually purchase their homes outright.” The foundation has built five of these three and four-bedroom homes in Hornby for first-home buyers, and the contract has just been let to build a further five, which will be due for completion in March/April 2017, Mr King says. In order to inform local communities about the opportunities for potential home ownership being provided, the foundation contacts larger employers and other organisations to let them know when developments are coming up, and this approach has brought a positive response, he says. Further along Lesley Keast Place are 10 Salvation Army houses that were delivered for the organisation by the Housing Foundation. These new, two and three-bedroom homes are occupied by people that were affected by the earthquakes and fulfilled the Salvation Army’s social housing criteria, acting manager for the Salvation Army’s social housing, Greg Coyle says. “It’s a mixed group and the idea is for them to develop a sense of community by getting to know each other and support each other,” Mr Coyle says. “And if any of them get into social difficulty or distress, the Salvation Army can bring its considerable experience in to help the situation.”

Business park bringing jobs and growth to Hornby

A
n integral part of the Hornby community, Hornby High School, which opened in 1975, is itself about to undergo significant developments. All the present school buildings, apart from the auditorium and music school, which will have a facelift, are to be demolished and replaced with a brandnew complex of buildings. Work on the $24-million project is due to start in March/April 2017 with completion expected in late 2018. The development of a new business park in the heart of Hornby is bringing a new era of employment and business activity to the area, while retaining elements of its rich and colourful history – the Waterloo Business Park is located on the site once occupied by the Islington Freezing Works and there are plans to incorporate some of its Victorian-era
buildings within the new complex. Construction activity got underway in 2013; however, the concept for the park was well over a decade in the planning, assistant development manager Joel Webber says. During that time, community engagement, participation and integration were key considerations in the evolution, planning and development of Waterloo Business Park, he says. The park will have a total of 104 lots of development land, and once completed will be home to around 100 individual businesses, including retail. “Sub-division of development land is due to be completed by mid-2017, while our convenience-retail focused development, Islington Square, on the site of the old Islington meat processing plant will be constructed and delivered in phases over an additional two to five
years,” Mr Webber says. The typical profile of businesses that have committed to Waterloo Business Park are well-established, owneroccupier businesses, Mr Webber says, with a number having bought multiple lots and consolidated them into single lots for their specific requirements. These include Hamilton Jet, which has consolidated five lots into one lot of 7.5ha, Connetics, which has consolidated three lots into one lot of 5.5ha and Cardinal Logistics, which has consolidated four lots into one lot of 2.5ha. “We have noticed that the majority of the businesses that have committed to Waterloo Business Park are dominated by freight/logistics/distribution, light manufacturing and food production industries. “As a sub-set of those businesses, we’re seeing strong trends representing
businesses that are relocating from Christchurch’s eastern industrial areas to take advantage of such factors as the superior geotechnical ground conditions in the wider Hornby area, the strong growth in Christchurch’s western corridor and the superior roading infrastructure, vehicular access and proximity to both Christchurch International Airport and Lyttelton Port. “We are also seeing strong interest from businesses that are outgrowing premises in the immediate area. They have a high degree of confidence and comfort in the broader Hornby industrial catchment and will only consider relocating within its confines.” Mr Webber acknowledges Hornby’s transition from traditional primary industries into a more services-oriented model, as is reflected in the take-up at the business park.

Building a unique house is affordable
M
yles Laing started working on building sites at the age of fourteen, helping his father clean up rubbish, lift materials and carry out other basic jobs. Over time, he picked up many tricks of the trade. Myles has always had a passion for building and creating unique designs and initially wished to become an architect. The exhibition begins with a look at Air New Zealand’s uniform designs over the years, as well as traveller and crew stories.
It moves into the aircraft and flight aspect of the airline’s history, including the TEAL flying boat era, and the early days of flight in Canterbury. The story of former Christchurch Mayor Henry Wigram’s flying school and Lady Constance Stewart’s involvement with the Canterbury Aero Club are explored. It also looks at tourism pioneer Rodolph Wigley, who founded the Mt Cook Group that later included Mount Cook Airlines. The exhibition also features a virtual reality in-flight experience and takes a look at its promotion posters, videos and
examples of how the airline has adapted over 75 years. It won best exhibition at the New Zealand events awards last
month, beating the Gallipoli World War 1 exhibition at Te Papa. It will run until March 26 2017.

Breaking the language barrier for tennis players IN A first for tennis in Canterbury, Waimairi Tennis Club will offer two novel coaching programmes this summer – one conducted in Mandarin and the other for pre-schoolers. Club senior coach Adam Gard’ner, who has some Chinese Mandarin skills, saw an opportunity for Christchurch’s expanding Mandarin-speaking community to get involved in tennis. “Many new people to the city are looking for ways to meet up with others to have fun and to exercise and this programme will provide exactly those opportunities. It’s a ‘learn to play programme’ and it is based on Tennis New Zealand’s ‘Tennis Xpress’ programme for learners and intermediate level players. The big difference, though, is that it will be delivered predominantly in the Mandarin language,” said Gard’ner. Shanghai, China, was home to Gard’ner and his family for 12 years while he was involved in tennis management at the Shanghai Racquet Club and coach development with the Professional Tennis Registry. “There’s a real passion for tennis in China and players like Li Na are like superstars. We’re sure that local Mandarin speakers will be just as enthusiastic about our programme,” said Gard’ner. Effective treatment for many types of pain Complementary medicine is becoming increasingly sought after in New Zealand as people become aware of the many different methods of treating pain and ill health that are available here. Christchurch-based Chinese health practitioner Lan Xiao has developed a method of treatment, which she says has as an immediate affect on a wide variety of pains and health conditions. It is known as ‘acupuncture without needles’. Lan describes it as being similar to reflexology in that the problem area on the body is determined through pressure, but is much more accurate. Trained as a medical practitioner in China, Lan came to New Zealand in 1992 and began practising acupuncture in 1995. From that discipline she created her acupuncture without needles, and uses it to treat people of all ages with many different types of pain in all parts of the body. This can include arthritic pain, MS, and pain from injury. “For example, the treatment has been very successful for people who have painful joints caused by arthritis,” Lan says. Acupuncture without needles is also effective in restoring energy levels, she says.
“As people age their energy is reduced, and this can lead to other health problems. The acupuncture without needles treatment is like the body’s battery being charged up again, so their energy levels are restored, which in turn helps overcome their health problems.” Lan also uses it to treat depression and anxiety, and says it can help with addiction problems as well. “After the treatment the person has no cravings – because it treats the cause of the addiction.” She says the results are immediate, though people may need several treatments, depending on the extent of their health problem, and while it is slightly painful for few moments, everyone can tolerate it.
